He was killed during the Battle of Le Transloy on the 1st of October 1916, aged 24.

John, a general labourer was the eldest son of Alfred, a farm labourer and Amy Smith who lived in Church Street, Barford. John was born in Kineton. He had three brothers, Ernest, Wilfred and Thomas and a sister, Amy. All the family were born in different local villages, Walton, Tysoe, Kineton, Sherbourne, Ashorne, Tachbrook and Wasperton.

Decorations received, Military Medal, for bravery in the field, Star, British War Medal, Victory Medal.

He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
