He died of wounds in Egypt on the 7th April 1917, aged 26.

Henry Dennis Smith-Ryland was the son of Charles Alston, Esquire, and Mrs Edith Smith-Ryland who lived at Barford Hill House. He had a younger brother, Charles Ivor and sisters, Evelyn, Adria Noel and Kitty. At the time of his death, he was engaged to be married to Enid Petre, who lived in London. On the death of his father in 1914, Dennis took over his duties, managing the estate and taking part in village life. He organised a house for Belgian Refugees in the village and allowed Barford Hill House to be used as a Red Cross Hospital. His memorial service at Sherbourne Church was attended by a large number of people from both villages.

He is buried at the Kantara War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt.
